Reflexology is an ancient healing art that has its roots in China, India and the Middle-east. It is based on the principle that there are reflex points on the hands and feet that correspond to every part of the body. The therapist uses various thumb, finger and hand techniques to apply pressure to these points which produces a parasympathetic response throughout the nervous system. This helps the body relax tension, improve circulation and stimulate the body’s own self- healing mechanisms.
The client remains fully clothed lying face up on the treatment table and the therapist takes a full case history. The pressure used will be firm enough to avoid any ticklishness (a worry many people have) but also not enough to cause pain. The therapist will always work within the comfort level of the client.
Most people find the treatment very comforting and relaxing and some will even fall asleep. People find reflexology helpful for stress reduction, sleep problems and it is often used to improve mobility reduce pain and increase energy levels.
